PortraitJazz#2: John Coltrane - Blue Train

For the 2nd Edition of Portrait Jazz we would like to explore Blue Train. Recorded in 1958, this album features several of Coltrane's compositions.

Tunes like Moment's Notice and Lazy Bird, which have now become jazz standards, are early explorations into unknown harmonic territory and mark the beginning of Coltrane's musical journey into another dimension. For now though, it's still hard bop. Supporting cast include Miles Davis' Rhythm Section in Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones and a couple of Art Blakey's messangers in Lee Morgan and Curtis Fuller. Definitely one of the most iconic albums of all time.

PortraitJazz#1: Miles Davis - Relaxin

Portrait Jazz is a jam session every other Tuesday at Unit31. At every edition the house band plays a classic Jazz album from start to finish, after which we will open up for anyone who wants to join and play over various bebop/hard bop standards.

For the first edition of Portrait Jazz, we would like to explore 'Relaxin' with Miles Davis'. This album along with 3 others was recorded in just two sessions in 1956. Miles was clearly in a hurry to finish his contract with Prestige Records because of a more lucrative opportunity to join Columbia Records. Be that as it may, you won't hear jazz standards played much better than this - Miles and Tranes' soloing styles contrast really nice and the Rhythm section are so tight and precise. Hard Bop at its best.
